Qualifying solar leads: who to prioritise

Qualifying solar leads: who to prioritise

Not every enquiry deserves the same amount of your time. The installers who win most consistently are the ones who work out quickly which leads are worth a survey and a proposal, and which need parking or politely declining. Good qualification protects your diary, lifts your close rate, and stops you chasing jobs that were never going to land.

Start with the property

Solar lives and dies on the roof and the site. Before anything else, sanity check:

  • Roof orientation and pitch, and how much unshaded space is actually usable.
  • Roof condition and age, since nobody wants to lift panels off a roof that needs replacing in two years.
  • Shading from trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings across the day.
  • For commercial, the roof type and structure, available plant space, and whether it is a single decision or a landlord and tenant situation.

A property that clearly is not suitable is a fast, honest "not right now", and that honesty builds more trust than a forced pitch.

Then the person and the numbers

A suitable roof is only half the story. You are looking for someone with a real reason to buy and the authority to say yes:

  • Energy usage. Higher bills mean a stronger case and a shorter payback, so ask what they are spending now.
  • Motivation. Bill savings, energy security, sustainability targets, or all three. Knowing the driver shapes the whole conversation.
  • Decision makers. For homes, is the other half on board. For commercial, who signs, who holds the budget, and who has to be convinced along the way.
  • Timeframe. Are they ready this quarter, or gathering ideas for next year. Both are fine, but they belong in different parts of your pipeline.

Use your pipeline to protect your focus

Once you know the shape of a lead, put it where it belongs. Hot, well qualified leads with a survey booked sit at the top. Genuine but slower prospects go into a nurture track so they are not forgotten. Poor fits are closed out cleanly. Radiant's stages exist so you always know which handful of leads deserve your energy this week, rather than treating a cold enquiry and a ready buyer the same way.

The quick qualification checklist

  • Is the roof or site genuinely suitable?
  • Are the bills high enough for a strong case?
  • Have you got the real decision makers involved?
  • Is there a timeframe you can work with?
  • Does the project match the work you actually want?

Answer those five before you invest in a full proposal, and you will spend far more of your time on the jobs most likely to close.
